Naturally, being estate agents, we have the property shown above down as "Magnificent House, with Lovely Views, needing only Minor Cosmetic Work".

Many Brits experience a shock the first time they see inside a Spanish farm house. Beforehand, they say "we don't mind doing a bit of refurbishment - painting, wallpapering, that sort of thing". Perhaps there will be an Aga in the kitchen, a thatched roof, nice curtains...  They do not expect a house with no electricity or water connected, perhaps only 3 walls and a hole in what remains of the roof , rubbish strewn everywhere..... However, all is not lost!
It is the case that repairs, rebuilding and modernising are a lot cheaper in Andalucia than they are in the UK.. Tiles, for example, that retail for about £ 18 a sq.m. in the UK, cost here about £ 5 and unskilled building labour is about £ 4 an hour, or less for (sometimes illegal) immigrant labour.However, by the time you have a list 5 or 6 pages long of "things to get done", it can mount up. Generally, a lot of the work is plastering, plastering..and more plastering, so in the case of people with a bit of practice in building, they can get the cost down considerably if they do some of the work themselves. After all, one does not want to suffer from boredom - and there is nothing like a bit of plastering for avoiding this. And then there is the tiling and the white- washing and the painting and strengthening the floor upstairs and . but I don't want to depress you - after all, you are not really going to do it all yourself, are you? A totally un-modernised village house will often end up costing about an extra € 30.000 to leave it really nice and comfortable, having all the work done by others. ( Though the chintz curtains would be extra.) A detached house might be about € 50.000. Naturally, these figures will vary from house to house and will depend on exactly what people regard as "livable and comfortable" The work will usually take 2 or 3 months to do. But the end result of all the work is usually spectacular !!!
